Lights, Camera… Complicated?

It’s... Complicated? isn’t just a title; it’s a lifestyle choice. Did you ever decide to adopt a cactus because you heard they’re low-maintenance. It's all cute and aesthetics until you get pricked. That’s what happens when you try to cram an entire messy, emotional story into a short trailer — it’s like trying to fit a giraffe into a small car.

(You get the picture here)
So, I created a book trailer. Because evidently, writing a whole novel about life, mental health, and a thrilling mystery wasn't challenging enough — I decided to encapsulate it all in a video too without thinking how much work actually went into. Clever, right? After all, who wouldn’t want to add “professional stress coordinator” to their résumé? I can just imagine it: “Skilled in transforming existential crisis into cinematic art.”
But here’s the thing: It’s... Complicated? isn’t just some random tale I concocted during a caffeine-driven night (though, let’s be honest, that’s how most of my ideas originate). It did, however, come from pieces of real life, twisted into an exaggerated world that’s part thriller and part “maybe you should talk to someone.” (Don’t worry, I’m working on it — one awkward therapy session at a time.) The trailer needed to reflect that vibe. Dark and, Occasionally, a bit too real. Consider it a rollercoaster ride through my mind, complete with all the ups, downs, and that one loop-de-loop that makes you question all your life decisions.
Embracing the Journey
I honestly didn't know what to expect when jumping into this little school project. At first glance, it seemed like a straightforward ride, one that would allow me to explore my creativity and showcase my skills. I thought it was going to be a really cool idea, something that would not only be enjoyable to work on but also rewarding in the end. However, as I began to dive deeper into the project, I quickly realized that I wasn't fully prepared for the amount of struggle I was facing when putting this together. The challenges began to pile up, and I found myself grappling with unexpected obstacles that really tested my patience.
In hindsight, I may have bit off more than I can chew. The initial excitement I felt began to morph into a sense of overwhelm as deadlines rolled in and tasks multiplied. Each step of the process seemed to reveal new complexities that I had not anticipated. I encountered technical difficulties that required me to learn new skills on the fly, and I faced moments of self-doubt that made me question whether I was capable of completing the project at all. Despite these hurdles, I held onto the vision I had crafted in my mind. It was a compelling image of what I wanted to achieve, and I was determined to see it through with the limited time I had to get it done.
As I pushed forward, I realized the journey was as crucial as the final outcome. Each struggle taught me resilience and adaptability, and I learned to break tasks into manageable pieces. This experience demonstrated the power of perseverance and embracing the journey, regardless of its challenges.
Why a Trailer?
Because some people don’t like to read… kidding. (Kind of.)
Before this month, I’d never really created something like this. But now felt like as good a time as any to push myself beyond the page and into something more… visual. I wanted to capture the feeling of the book before you even turn the first page. If I wanted readers to get as excited about this story as I am, I needed to give them a taste of what it was like creating it — a mix of tension, mystery, and a healthy dose of “what the #%$^ did I just sign up for?” seemed like the fastest way to throw you straight into that world and leave the questions for later.
What's it about?
Now, of course, I can't just throw you into the trailer without an idea of what it is. So, let me tell you a little about it.
On October 1st, 2024, rumors of a masked assailant, mysterious boxes, and a series of gruesome deaths strike fear through Manhattan, NY. In a world of false hope, all Niles Sterling desires is an escape. Meanwhile, Mikael Hensley struggles to salvage the family business. When their paths cross, Mikael extends a job offer, and Niles seizes the opportunity as his one chance at normalcy. As tension escalates between the two at work, emotions ignite, and Mikael can’t help but feel drawn to Niles. When Niles becomes the assailant's next target, Mikael is determined to keep him safe at all costs.
